EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Mattel, the corporation that makes the popular Barbie doll, has decided to add to its ever-expanding range with the “Adventist Missionary Barbie.”

The release of Adventist Missionary Barbie is an attempt to target the subculture of Adventism in an increasingly competitive market for children’s dolls. Executives also hope to combat critique of Barbie’s influence on children, which many say promotes an unhealthy body image and an obsession with materialism.

Adventist Missionary Barbie will be sold in a variety of mission-appropriate outfits, with Barbie bug spray and half-built school and church construction projects sold as highly-recommended accessories.

Barbie spokesperson Sevvy Ken said that company execs believed that Adventist Missionary Bible would “allow children to experience the beauty of sacrificial volunteer service from the comfort of their living rooms.”

“Your cheeks are lovely with ornaments, Your neck with strings of beads. We will make for you ornaments of gold with beads of silver.” (Song of Solomon 1:10-11, NASB)

  2. Sevvy, this is a classic line, complete with a play on words involving Ken and Sevvy: “Barbie spokesperson Sevvy Ken said that company execs believed that Adventist Missionary Barbie would ‘allow children to experience the beauty of sacrificial volunteer service from the comfort of their living rooms.'”

My Christmas shopping is done for 2016!! This “Barbie” doll is not diverse enough for all 13 Divisions. What about an Adventist Missionary Ken doll? Maybe BA should contact the LEGO people about producing a village kit, hospital kit, Amazon River mission boat kit, mission planes landing on the narrow landing strips, people out doing literature work-all out of LEGOS. Better yet, why not make bobble head dolls of our elite GC people? I’ll take a couple of Ted Wilson bobble heads. There is no end to this unique marketing idea. Go for it!! FYI-whatever happened to those SDA trading cards? I’ll trade 2 Ellen Whites for a Uriah Smith or a Jasper Wayne! Woe iz me!!
