Magic-Free Adventist Screening of Aladdin Lasts Five Minutes

BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. — An Adventist-appropriate version of Disney’s live action Aladdin re-make was screened on the campus of Andrews University last night. The screening, which took place in the Howard Performing Arts Center, played to a capacity crowd. The film had been edited by the denomination’s Biblical Research Institute to make sure that no references were made to magic or the supernatural. The BRI editing team ruthlessly chopped any and all magic carpet rides, genie appearances and Jafar sorcerer tricks from the film leaving a solid five minutes, half of which featured scrolling credits.

Ah, yes!! Good ol’ Adventist censorship. This particular piece of satire reminded me of the time when the Lynwood Church (now extinct) gave a showing of the “Bob Mathias” story. At the precise moment where Mathias kissed his fiancée, the projectionist put his hand over the projector’s lens.

Then there was the production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town” at La Sierra College (now University) in the late 60s. The audience had to be reminded that, given the Adventist position on “the state of the dead,” the conversation among the occupants of the town’s cemetery were not to be taken literally.
