Snopes Fact Checks Evangelists

UNITED STATES — Fact-checking site Snopes has begun investigating Adventist evangelists prone to exaggeration and what the site calls “recitation of entirely made-up facts and stories manufactured to bolster sermon talking points.”

Snopes staff have quietly sat in on Sabbath morning sermons and multi-week campaigns over the last year. Common findings include sermon references to events that preachers claim are as clear in their minds “as if they happened yesterday,” that clearly only happened in the mind of the evangelist.

“For a movement claiming to share Present Truth, it’s ironic that so many preachers resort to dramatized fiction,” said a Snopes article announcing the fact-checking operation the site has dubbed “The Investigative Judgment.”
