12 Common Trap Questions From Nosy Church Members (And How to Survive Them)
If you’ve been in an Adventist church longer than one potluck cycle, you already know: some questions are not questions. They’re spiritual tripwires wrapped in a smile, a casserole dish, and a “just wondering.”
These people mean well. Mostly. They also have a gift for turning fellowship hall small talk into a theological interview, a lifestyle audit, and a nominating-committee recruitment drive.
Here is how to answer without starting a three-hour discussion, a prayer chain, or an anonymous letter to the conference.
Q: So… are you still Adventist? A: Yes. I just also occasionally eat cheese and have thoughts.
Q: Did you see what she wore to church? A: No. My eyes are on Jesus.
Q: Have you read what Ellen White said about that? A: Yes. All of it. Including the part she wrote about people who quote her at potluck instead of passing the green beans.
Q: Why weren’t you at prayer meeting / vespers / Sabbath School / Pathfinders / the second service / the committee that meets after the committee? A: I was observing the Sabbath. Deeply. From a horizontal position.
Q: Are you vegan now, or just vegetarian, or… what exactly is happening with your plate? A: I’m in a personal relationship with this casserole. Please don’t make it doctrinal.
Q: When are you getting baptized / rebaptized / married / ordained / on the board / in Pathfinder leadership? A: When the nominating committee stops making eye contact with me in the lobby.
Q: Did you notice he didn’t mention Ellen White? A: I noticed he mentioned Jesus. I’m going to start there and see how far that gets me.
Q: Have you heard what’s going on at the conference / GC / that other church across town? A: No, and I’m trying to keep it that way until Jesus comes.
Q: Why don’t the young people stay? A: Possibly because every conversation starts with “Why don’t the young people stay?”
Q: Are you ready for the Time of Trouble? A: I have lentils, a flashlight, and unresolved issues with the Church Manual. I think that counts.
Q: Who are you dating / why are you still single / have you considered that nice young person from Sabbath School? A: I’m focusing on my walk with the Lord. And on making it to the parking lot in peace.
Q: Do you remember what today is? A: Sabbath. Which means I legally cannot answer any more questions until sundown. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a potluck container to fill and a strategic exit to execute.
Pro tip: if they follow you to the parking lot, smile, quote “Come unto me, all ye that labor,” and start your car before the next sub-point appears.
