If Your Theology Doesn’t Reduce Anxiety, People Will Find One That Does

Share

An anxious generation will not be discipled by a fearful church.

We are living in an age of burnout, rising depression, economic instability, and constant digital alarm bells. People are already overwhelmed before they ever walk through our doors. If what they encounter inside amplifies fear instead of relieving it, they won’t stay. They’ll go looking for something that steadies them.

There is absolutely no biblical basis for fearmongering — even with our understanding of end times and prophecy. The prophetic story in Scripture is not designed to terrify the faithful but to anchor them. Revelation was given to persecuted believers as assurance that Christ wins, not as a script for chronic panic. “Perfect love casts out fear.” The arc of the gospel bends toward confidence, not dread.

And we must be rock solid on the assurance of salvation. If people leave our churches unsure whether God actually saves them, we have failed to preach the heart of the New Testament. The cross was not a tentative gesture. It was decisive. Salvation is not sustained by anxiety management but by trust in a finished work.

Adventism at its best offers Sabbath rest in a restless world, health in a frantic culture, hope in apocalyptic headlines. But if our tone contradicts our theology, people will feel the tension.

If our message does not calm trembling hearts, someone else’s philosophy will.

The future will belong to communities where prophecy produces courage, doctrine produces peace, and salvation produces joy.
