SILVER SPRING, Md. — The General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists has ordered all of the denomination’s congregations to stop using the song Hear the pennies dropping in children’s Sabbath School. A press release from the church headquarters explained that the song had been banned for encouraging young minds to be cheap with their offerings.

GC Stewardship Director, Morre Mites, claimed that the chorus had “helped raise generations of Adventists who seem to associate mere pennies with church giving.”

Mites pushed back on member suggestions that instead of banning the song, the GC should simply update the beloved song with more aggressive wording in the spirit of preserving church heritage.

“We’ve already tried different lyrics at a number of Sabbath school testing sites and it gets way too wordy,” said Mite. “Switching out the word ‘pennies’ for ‘five-dollar-and-up-bills’ is super clumsy. And besides you can’t hear bills dropping.”

  1. Only in Canada

In Canada it’s easy. “Hear the Loonies Dropping” or even “Hear the Toonies Dropping” has a nice ring to it, especially into a metal offering plate. Especially since Canada doesn’t mint pennies any more. And at $.75 on the American dollar, it’s a good deal for parents of said children, as well as increasing the offering by 75%. Win, win.

This is crazy. Pennies are wonderful. Can you imagine what Trump would do about this? Even Ben Carson admits that Trump could be a disaster, a “terrible president.” His supporters must be absent without leave.

  3. According to a report by Religion News Service, Kelly — author of Should the Church Teach Tithing? A Theologian?s Conclusions about a Taboo Doctrine — is convinced that biblical tithing only involved food from farmers and herdsmen in Israel who were under the Old Covenant.
The author tells RNS that subject of tithing is being treated “like a taboo” in churches today. “The most bold preachers suddenly run or get angry when asked to discuss tithing,” he asserts, adding that “sincere” church members who might question the doctrine are sometimes accused of being trouble-makers. “We simply request a close re-examination of God’s Word concerning tithing,” he says.
Kelly also contends that if the doctrine put forth in Malachi really applied today, “then millions of poor tithing Christians would have escaped poverty and would have become the wealthiest group of people in the world instead of remaining poor.” And because that has not happened, Kelly says it is evidence that the vast majority of poor tithers are never blessed financially just because they tithe. “Neither the Old Covenant blessings nor curses apply to Christians who were never under that covenant” CONCLUSION: Tithe was never required from, Jesus Christ. His early years wages as a carpenter were not subject to tithe. Jesus the priest /preacher was not obligated to pay tithe. Jesus is not on record for changing the tithe law to include Gospel ministers. SDA administrators regularly examine a pastor’s personal tithe remittances:-)
