Why Be Adventist When the Church Drives You Crazy?

Share

Honest answer? You probably have a list of reasons to leave. Most of them are valid.

The institutional self-protection. The debates that never land anywhere. The conference that seems more interested in organizational survival than actual mission. The ways the church has hurt people and called it faithfulness.

None of that is nothing.

But here’s the thing about Adventism: underneath the bureaucratic sediment, there’s something that doesn’t belong to the institution. It belongs to you. And it keeps showing up.

You believe time can be made holy—that Sabbath isn’t just a rule but a weekly act of defiance against a culture that treats rest as laziness and worth as productivity. You can’t unknow that.

You believe the body is sacred—not as an image project, but as stewardship. That your choices about how you live carry actual weight.

You believe truth is worth chasing even when it’s inconvenient. Especially then.

You believe history has a destination. That the chaos is not the final word.

And you believe ordinary people are allowed to argue with God—that doubt and faith aren’t opposites, and that “keep wrestling” is a legitimate theological position.

The institution can be maddening. But the institution isn’t the faith.

Stay—not to defend the structure, but to hold it accountable to what it keeps saying it believes.

Reform has always been in the DNA. So has the stubborn hope that God isn’t done with any of this.

Including you.

If this hit a nerve, you already know why this matters.

Because these are the conversations Adventists are having quietly—while the public version stays polished and safe.

That gap doesn’t close on its own.
