Should Women be Ordained as Adventist Pastors?

Share

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has wrestled with womenโ€™s ordination for decades. At the 1990 General Conference Session in Indianapolis, delegates voted against approving the ordination of women to the gospel ministry, citing insufficient world-church support and risks to unity. The 1995 Session reaffirmed this stance. The 2015 San Antonio vote rejected letting divisions decide locally, keeping a worldwide male-only policy for full ordination. Yet women have long served as commissioned pastors, performing baptisms, preaching, and leading churches. Some regions quietly ordain them anyway, while others see it as rebellion. Tension simmers. Unity fractures.

Hereโ€™s the truth: this isnโ€™t a clear biblical deal-breaker. Scripture shows women in prominent ministry rolesโ€”prophets, deacons, and apostlesโ€™ co-workers. Ellen White, our co-founder, exercised enormous spiritual authority without ordination. No single text clearly says, โ€œNever ordain a woman pastor.โ€ The real divide is often cultural. In parts of the world where gender roles are more traditional, ordination creates barriers to outreach. In more secular or progressive contexts, denying it can hinder mission and drive away gifted leaders.

Weโ€™re a global church facing wildly different mission fields. Forcing uniformity on a non-fundamental issue wastes energy and breeds resentment. Let divisions and unions decide what works best locally. Regional determination respects diversity, prioritizes the Great Commission over uniformity, and frees us to focus on what actually matters: preaching the Three Angelsโ€™ Messages.

The Bible doesnโ€™t settle this neatly. Culture does. Time to trust local leaders and get back to work.
