What If Pastors Had Public Report Cards?

Share

Every Adventist kid remembers report card day. The quiet tension. The careful unfolding of the paper. The hopeful search for an A that proves your late-night studying actually meant something.

But here’s a thought: what if pastors got report cards too?

Not secret evaluations buried in conference paperwork. Not polite whispers in the church parking lot. Actual feedback from the people pastors serve every week.

Imagine a simple church “report card.” Nothing cruel. Nothing anonymous and toxic. Just honest reflection from the congregation.

Preaching: Are sermons thoughtful, biblical, and spiritually nourishing—or assembled somewhere between Friday night and the opening hymn?

Pastoral Care: When members are grieving, struggling, or overwhelmed, does the pastor show up?

Hospital Visits: Few things say “shepherd” like walking hospital corridors and praying before surgery.

Member Connection: Does the pastor know people’s names, their stories, and their struggles?

Leadership and Vision: Is the church moving somewhere meaningful spiritually—or just holding weekly meetings with potluck?

To be fair, pastors already carry enormous expectations. Many serve faithfully while juggling preaching, administration, counseling, and the occasional board meeting that lasts longer than the Book of Isaiah.

But healthy communities practice honest feedback.

Teachers receive evaluations. Leaders in most professions do too. Even the apostle Paul received plenty of feedback from churches.

Maybe the real value of a “pastor report card” wouldn’t be judgment.

Maybe it would be conversation.

And honestly, if pastors get report cards… church boards might need one too.
