MANILA, Philippines — The frontrunner in the race to become the next president of the Philippines has vowed to ban pork consumption in the Southeast Asian country in return for Seventh-day Adventist votes.
Former Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte told Adventist leaders in Manila that he would “finish off” pork eating in the Philippines just as effectively as he had terminated the taxidermied wild boar he was recently pictured with outside his home.
Although many wonder what effect the pork ban vow will have on Duterte’s poll numbers with the Philippine public as a whole, analysts predict a surge of support from Adventists, a demographic with which the candidate is already quite popular.
To potential voters that may be turned off by Duterte’s anti-pork vow, he recommended sampling vegetarian alternatives to the whole spit-roasted pig called “lechon,” a delicacy almost universally enjoyed in the Philippines. Analysts are divided as to whether his advice will be heeded.
