A new study has revealed the favorite hymn among Seventh-day Adventists is whichever one happens to be the closing hymn that Sabbath.
Researchers surveyed thousands of Adventists across the globe, asking them to name their most beloved hymn. While responses included classics like “Amazing Grace,” “We Have This Hope,” and “Bringing in the Sheaves,” an overwhelming majority simply answered: “The closing hymn.”
“As soon as that last hymn starts, no matter what it is, you can see the whole congregation perk up,” explained lead researcher Dr. Ima Hungree. “Suddenly everyone is singing at the top of their lungs with huge smiles on their faces. The joy is palpable.”
Further interviews revealed the reason behind this phenomenon – the closing hymn signals that potluck is mere minutes away. Stomachs start rumbling and minds begin wandering to thoughts of haystacks, Special K loaf, and Aunt Mabel’s famous potato salad.
“I could never remember the words to any hymns,” admitted one participant. “But when I hear that closing hymn, it’s like the holy spirit descends and I’m belting out every verse. Then I make a beeline to the fellowship hall to scope out the best dishes before the line forms.”
