No, You Can’t Hasten the Second Coming

Share

Somewhere along the way, “sharing the gospel” turned into “speeding up Jesus.”

The idea usually leans on 2 Peter 3:12 about “hastening” the day of God and Matthew 24:14 about the gospel going to all the world. Fair enough. Mission matters. Faithfulness matters.

But here’s the problem: we quietly turned participation into control.

The message becomes: If we were more committed, more holy, more effective — He would’ve come by now. Translation? Heaven is waiting on our performance metrics.

That’s not urgency. That’s pressure.

It subtly blames the church — or worse, teenagers at youth congress — for the “delay.” It turns the Second Coming into a stalled group project where God is pacing in heaven waiting for our quarterly reports.

Is God sovereign, or is He waiting on better social media engagement?

Scripture presents a God who sets times and seasons, not One dependent on our productivity charts. We are invited into mission, not placed in charge of the eschatological calendar.

And maybe — just maybe — the delay isn’t proof of our failure. Maybe it’s mercy.

Long for His return. Preach boldly. Live faithfully.

But let’s stop acting like Jesus is stuck in heaven because Karen didn’t pass out enough tracts at the park.

He’ll return because He promised.

Not because we finally optimized evangelism.

Barely.
