1. “We Value Your Perspective.”
This phrase is extremely useful because it is both warm and consequence-free. It communicates that your input has been received, appreciated, and will be placed in a folder. The folder is real. The folder is labeled. No one is sure where the folder goes after that, but the important thing is that you felt heard. Studies show that feeling heard and being heard produce similar short-term emotional outcomes.
2. “This Is a Process.”
Change takes time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. The General Conference wasn’t restructured in a century. When the Global South asks why decisions that affect the majority of the church are still being made by a minority of the church, the correct response is to gesture meaningfully at the complexity of process. Processes have stages. We are in a stage. The next stage will also be a stage.
3. “We’re Working on Representation.”
Representation is being worked on. There is a committee. The committee is diverse. The committee advises a less diverse committee, which reports to a structure that predates most of the represented countries’ independence. But the first committee is genuinely diverse and meets twice a year, usually in a city with a good airport.
4. “Let’s Not Make This About Geography.”
Theology is universal. Truth transcends borders. The fact that universal, borderless truth consistently originates from the same 20-square-mile radius is probably a coincidence and definitely not worth a special session. When someone from Cameroon or the Philippines raises this, the most efficient response is to elevate the conversation above the political. Elevation is spiritual. Politics is divisive. We are a spiritual organization.
5. “The Church Moves as One.”
This is the most advanced technique and should be deployed only when the previous four have been exhausted. It works because it is beautiful and technically true in the same way that a ship moves as one even when most of the passengers are in steerage. Unity is a core Adventist value. So is the investigative judgment, and we’ve managed to keep that conversation centralized too.
