Notes From an Adventist at Church on Sunday

Share

(aka: The Perks of Going to Church on Sunday / Why I Love Dropping In on the Sunday Crowd)

Look, I know some Adventists get real nervous when one of us wanders into a Sunday church (“Are you… OK? Blink twice if you need backup.”). But every time I go, I’m reminded that the Christian family is way bigger—and way more beautiful—than the assumptions we sometimes carry around in Adventist Land.

Honestly? I love the fellowship. I love the warmth. I love the greeters who seem powered by caffeine we pretend we don’t touch. And I love being reminded that God is clearly at work across the whole Christian spectrum.
There’s so much to learn from other believers—their music, their community rhythms, their celebration of grace, their ease with inviting complete strangers to Bible study. And yes, there are moments when I quietly appreciate the things we have in Adventism: our Sabbath rhythm, our health focus, our global reach, our prophetic heritage. But stepping into a Sunday service is like opening a window and letting some cross-denominational fresh air in.

Because here’s the truth: you can be deeply Adventist and still be a team player in the Body of Christ. You can love your tradition and still enjoy comparing notes, recognizing shared pain points, celebrating common strengths, and feeling the unity that’s already there. And it’s good—for us and for them—to see that Adventists are happy to show up, build bridges, and be part of the wider family of believers.

Amen to that.

If this post reminds you that you can be a confident, secure Adventist and joyfully connect with the wider Christian family, I’d love your support. Barely Adventist is here to celebrate our identity while building bridges, offering humor, nuance, and grace that strengthen—not shrink—our place in the Body of Christ.
