Is God Convinced When We Call Ourselves the Remnant?

Share

Adventists have used that word for generations. The remnant. The faithful few. The people with “the truth.” And while there’s something inspiring about believing God has called us for a purpose, let’s admit it: the term can also come with a dangerous amount of spiritual swagger.

“We are the chosen ones” can quietly turn into “everyone else is spiritually downgraded.”

Now, before anyone panics and starts highlighting Ellen White quotes in all caps, let me be clear: I love the Adventist Church. I’m committed to it. I think God has blessed this movement with incredible gifts. Our emphasis on Sabbath rest, holistic health, Bible study, prophecy, and a balanced understanding of grace and obedience has real value when it’s not pushed into weird conspiracy territory.

But maybe being part of “the remnant” should make us more humble, not more exclusive.

Because God has faithful people everywhere. In every country. In every denomination. In churches with fog machines and churches with 14-minute organ preludes. God is bigger than our membership records.

If we truly believe we’ve been entrusted with truth, then our churches should be the most welcoming, least self-absorbed communities on earth. Less “members-only club.” More “come eat with us.”

God has a remnant people. We’re blessed to be part of it.

But maybe the best proof of that calling isn’t how loudly we claim the title.

Maybe it’s how lovingly we treat everyone else.
