For a group that often specializes in self-criticism, it’s worth pausing to notice something: the Adventist experiment is actually working.
We take the Bible seriously—sometimes very seriously. Whole sermons have been preached on the Greek verb tense of a comma. But beneath the occasional overanalysis is something admirable: a community deeply committed to Scripture and to aligning life around it.
Then there’s health. Adventists didn’t just invent a few potluck oddities and call it a day. God gave this movement a health message that has helped us crack the code on longevity. Study after study keeps noticing that Adventists—especially the plant-loving, walk-after-dinner variety—tend to live significantly longer than average.
Add to that a global network of schools, universities, clinics, and hospitals that circle the planet. In villages, cities, islands, and megacities, Adventists are quietly teaching, healing, and feeding people every day.
And despite what the loudest internet arguments might suggest, the church is actually growing.
All of this grew out of a community that believed something bold: Jesus is coming back—and possibly sooner than we think. That belief created a healthy urgency. Build schools. Start hospitals. Share hope. Don’t waste time.
None of this should feed triumphalism. Adventists can be stubborn. We can be fully persuaded in our own minds—often simultaneously in multiple directions. And we self-sabotage.
But it should put things in perspective. God is clearly blessing this global family.
So maybe the path forward isn’t doubling down on regional silos or endless internal debates. Maybe it’s bridge-building.
Let’s focus on what we actually agree on: salvation, the Sabbath, the Second Coming, and abundant life right now.
Frankly, we can do vastly better.
And the good news?
God is just be getting started.

If you enjoyed that post, here’s the honest truth:
Spaces like this don’t happen by accident.
Every day I’m trying to build something a little unusual for the Adventist world—a place where we can laugh at ourselves, think out loud, ask honest questions, and still celebrate the good things God is doing in our community.
BarelyAdventist posts the jokes, memes, and conversation starters that get thousands of Adventists talking. But behind each post is time, creativity, and a commitment to keep the conversation thoughtful, hopeful, and just irreverent enough to keep us honest.
That’s where Patreon comes in.
When you become a patron, you’re not just buying a perk. You’re helping keep this whole experiment alive. You’re supporting independent Adventist media that isn’t afraid to spark discussion while still loving the church deeply.
And yes—patrons do get a fun bonus: you see the longer-form posts first, before anyone else.
But the bigger thing is this: you’re helping build a community where thousands of Adventists can laugh, reflect, and connect every day.
If BarelyAdventist has ever made you smile, made you think, or helped you feel a little less alone in the Adventist experience…
