HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Famed actor and director, Mel Gibson is officially the first person to be awarded honorary membership by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Although church leaders warned that the honorary membership did not carry any eternal consequence, Gibson was recognized for honoring “one of our best and bravest,” said General Conference spokesperson Novanal Cine.
Gibson directed the criticaly accalimed biographical war film Hacksaw Ridge due to be released in November. The film tells the story of US Army medic and Seventh-day Adventist conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss who was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman for heroically saving 75 fellow soldiers’ lives during the World War II Battle of Okinawa.
When asked just how Adventist the honorary membership made Gibson, Cine read a prepared statement that claimed Gibson “can now be considered to be as real an Adventist as Taco Bell is Mexican.”
