So… What Does “Soon” Actually Mean, Adventists?

Share

Adventists were saying “Jesus is coming soon” long before there were microwaves, Wi-Fi, or vegan cheese that didn’t taste like despair. But what did “soon” actually mean when the Bible said it?

In Greek, the word in places like Revelation 22:12 — “Behold, I am coming quickly” — is τάχυ (tachu), which doesn’t strictly mean soon in the way we use it.

It means “suddenly,” “without delay once it starts,” or “with swiftness.”

So maybe it’s not “soon” as in “next Thursday,” but “soon” as in “when it happens, it’ll be fast — don’t bother refreshing your prophecy chart.”

The early church lived like that — in expectant tension. Every generation since has wrestled with the same paradox: the delay feels endless, but when it finally happens, it’ll feel instant.

So yes — Jesus is coming soon. But “soon” is God’s word for “on My perfect timetable — not your Google Calendar.”

Until then, maybe the real call is to live like every moment matters… and maybe not wait until the Second Coming to start being kind, brave, or joyful.
