Publishing houses across the Adventist world have thrown their hats into the ring to secure the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to print a billion copies of Ellen White classic “The Great Controversy”. The General Conference invited bids for the printing project after announcing plans to distribute a billion copies of the book as part of a worldwide outreach effort.
“We’ve never seen anything like this before,” remarked one publishing executive, who preferred to remain anonymous. “Printing one billion copies of ‘The Great Controversy’ could literally mean life or death for my publishing house as ABC stores just aren’t ordering enough stock from us these days.
Publishers are pulling out all the stops to make the most enticing offers, with some promising innovative printing techniques, exclusive illustrations, and even personalized versions of the book tailored to different cultures.
Amidst all the excitement and furious bidding, some skeptics have raised concerns about the environmental impact of printing a billion copies of “The Great Controversy.” One estimate states that such a massive print run might necessitate the replanting of an entire forest.
More eco friendly publishers have proposed printing the books on recycled hymnals as nobody uses hard copy hymnals any more.
